The oils weren't dry till Saturday and, as I had my youngest's 9th birthday party on Sat., I had to wait till today to do any more work on this painting.

Using the tracing, I offset the design once again onto the canvas then set about giving the figures some shape. Also picked in some background details (the houses.)

More detail being worked in giving the figures a bit of depth.

Now I wait for the paint to dry once more before working on it again. Shouldn't have to wait as long this time as the paint is not as thick, so I'm hoping to be able to work on this some more tomorrow. :~)

Extremely cool work, Kate! What will you do with it when it's done?

Also - are your 'current mood' and 'current music' related? :(

Intimately. :~\ But she's gone now, thankgod.

Glad you're enjoying the painting. It's for the [livejournal.com profile] hp_art_project. I'm doing Chapter 1 - The Boy Who Lived. :~)

I love the houses in the background. And the step where you added depth has powerful results.

What will be your next addition to it?

*is in awe*
I love being able to witness the different stages a pictures goes through until it's finally finished. I love witnessing that even more when the picture is painted by you. Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to once again drool over your talent. It's really brilliant.

By the way, if you don't mind, your style looks very classic and refined. Do you have a classical arts education? Especially the way you draw/paint hands reminds me of some great classical artists :)

Blushing big time here! No, I don't have any 'classical' training. The only training I have was a 2yr Illustration Diploma, which I did in 2002/2003. The course has been invaluable - it really honed my skills and you can really see the difference in the quality of my art before and after if you look at my Star Wars art - http://www.maythemusebewithyou.com/starwars.htm
All but the first 4 and the Abbey Rd one were done before I did the course. (the Abbey Rd one was during - for a pop culture assignment ;~) )

Glad you're enjoying watching the painting grow!

I can only second all that has been said before. I love the picture very much.

It's amazing to see the progress of creativity. The painting looks beautiful so far. Wonderful colors and the composition is great. I can't wait to see the finished product.

This is fascinating! I'm looking forward to the next part. You know, I've quite never used oil (the one an only time was on paper, when I went for one session in the art course my sister was following, and I'm afraid I used it a lot like watercolours!). So that's great to see you work on it.

And the pic is looking like it will be gorgeous :)

One question: can you still see the pencil outline after painting on the characters, or is it already too thick?

No, as soon as the paint goes on the linework is hidden, which is why I work with the tracing beside me - so I can gauge where things should be. Each time a layer is dry, I lay the tracing over it again and rub the bits of linework I need onto the painting. It helps me make sure that I have everything in the right place.

Speaking of using paint like watercolours - I really like using acylics like watercolours - they can give you that watercolour look, but with more control and, of course, once they're dry they're permanent (can't be smudged etc.)

Anyhow, I'm about to start working on this oil painting right now, so I should have some more photos for you to look at soon. :~)
