Shock of shocks! My Bull Bay Magnolia flowered 2 days ago!
I planted it close to 20 years ago... and this is its first flower ever!
It smells DIVINE, and you can smell it from metres away! And that was on a cool day. Can't wait to see what it's like with more flowers (there appear to be more on the way) on a warm day!
I'm choosing to see it as an augur of good things to come; that our struggle for the last 20yrs is finally going to bloom into something pretty special. ^-^
Here's to a good 2009!

I stopped and knocked on the door the last time I was there to tell the owners about the origins of the tree. Partly so they wouldn't shoot the nutter in their garden and partly so they'd know its history. Apparently their young daughter loves to sit under the tree.
It now fills the entire cul-de-sac with its aroma. The young mother there says it's one of the ways they know they're home - the smell of magnolia overwhelms the property. :)
Enjoy your magnolia!

I've never heard of it before, but I hope you get lots more flowers, and every year too!!
Happy '09 and beyond.

I love magnolias. My grandfather's house in Baton Rouge has a beautiful one in the back yard. I keep meaning to buy one to try to grow here, because I think it's temperate enough in the winters for them, but I always forget. Maybe this year...
Happy New Year!
