SPIDER! but a very wee one at the moment

For those of you who might be interested....

Here's a baby huntsman we have currently living in our kitchen. He's currently about the size of a quarter (and, yes I know how big a quarter is now! Heh) and extraordinarily cute at this stage (as all babies are). He tends to live in one corner, but I've had to move him away as I've been painting (am currently painting the kitchen) because I certainly don't want to kill him. I did try to put my hand beside him in the photo, so you could get some idea of his size, but he had a major panic attack and was running all over the place and I'm sure his wee life flashed before his eyes. ;~P

Hubby named him last night. :~D

We're having a new kitchen put in next week, so I may have to move him. Don't wan't the workmen squishing him by accident!

What I've read of the brown recluse they are quite dangerous/poisonous though, aren't they?
I'll admit I do kill the poisonous ones. Can't take any chances with 4 kids.
But huntsmen are pretty harmless. And they eat flies, so that's always good. It's just that they're big (size of your hand) and hairy when fully grown, so that can be a tad off-putting. But my hubby usually just catches them in a jar and put them out. :~)

they are poisonous, yes (in a very nasty way), but we've only had one (it's not their usual territory) and i walked it across the highway to the nature preserve (because i am hopeless like that ;). almost everything i find in the house are harmless. the biggest i've seen was a wolf spider while living in england. very cool but sort of unsettling when it started jumping around 0_o

i wish we had big hairy spiders here. and i'm probably nuts for saying that but they do sound cool. :)

Blech! I hate spiders!

Oddly, though, I don't immediately kill them if I find them in my house. I try to get them into a jar and toss them outside.

If they crawl out of my sink or bathtub drain, however, it's "I hope you took swimming lessons, Eight Legs," right before letting loose a torrent of water.

I haven't seen a huntsman in ages!! I think they're getting rare here in Adelaide.. I caught a black spider yesterday, don't know what it is though, so we're keeping it safe until we can find out what it is!

Oh, believe me, I used to be completely phobic about spiders! But when you have one of these BIG huntsmen in the car with two babies... well, you can't abandon the car as you might once have done. ;~) You have to deal with the spider. :~P
So, between that and gardening (where there's literally a RedBack under every rock), I learned to get over my fear.
Plus, one day while gardening, I disturbed a nest and all these baby huntsmen poured out of it. Weeny white things the size of your little fingernail. I was completely freaked (as were most of the spiderlings who fled as fast as their weeny legs would carry them) until one of them THREATENED me. Took up a defensive stance and waved its weeny forearms menacingly at me! I just about fell over laughing. Such audacity! Such bravery! From something so SMALL! I haven't been phobic about spiders since.
That's not to say I want them in my immediate space either. I certainly didn't enjoy towelling myself dry with one!! O.o

You know, one almost fell in my son's breakfast once! We didn't even know he was in the kitchen (on the ceiling)! And they drop, see, which is probably their most unplesant habit.
My son and I were chatting and we hear this 'plop', then the next thing he does this funny little shriek and leaps out of his seat. And there were these long huntsman legs waving on the other side of his bowl!
It was really very funny at the time. ;~)

We had a wonderful black house spider in our bathroom for a couple of yrs. She was the BEST fly-catcher. I called her Drucilla. XD She had at least 2 batches of babies (none of whom stayed) and I was really sad when she upped and died recently.

Looking at your icon reminded me- do you remember the scene in GoF when Moody shows them the Unforgivables? He makes one of the spiders tapdance. I couldn't help wondering if Ron's dream in this was a deliberate foreshadowing.

I used to hate them, but I don't any more. Though you'll be amazed and impressed at how quick I can move or the sorts of screams I can make if surprised by one! :~D

I actually have 2 spiders in my computer room at the moment, but I think they're the brown house spider variety. But they're excellent in killing the midges that we have round here! Which is excellent because we had a lot! And the bites were terrible..

You know.. Since changing my layout I've been trying to figure that one out myself! I wasn't sure if it only did it to me, or if it did it to everyone! But I'll let you know as soon as I know myself! (Which I am working on!)

I think I may have just worked it out.. Maybe.. When customizing your journal layout, right in the end box (of the easy edit mode) you have the whole HTML box.. At the top, under the title of your journal put in -
<@META http-equiv=Page-Enter content="revealTrans(transition=12, duration=5.0)"@>
<@META http-equiv=Page-Exit content="revealTrans(transition=12, duration=5.0)"@>

Without the at signs. I'm pretty sure that's the coding.. But I'm not sure if you need a closing tag. As far as I can see, you don't.. But I can't be positive! >_< It was actually at duration=1.0 but I changed it to 5.0. I guess you can use whichever you like! ;o)
