I know I've mentioned once before an incident of a kangaroo in our yard. And, living where we do (right on the boundry between suburbia and rural) doesn't help in our attempts to educate the rest of the world that Australian cities don't in fact have kangaroos and koalas roaming the streets. ;~P

My kids' Primary school used to have a lot of vacant land around it, so it was pretty common for the kids to see roos in the paddock beside their oval and playground. A lot of that land has been turned in to housing now, so the kangaroos had moved to areas without building going on. Or so we thought.

A couple of days ago, my youngest came home from school to tell me that the kangaroos had literally herded all the kids off the oval at lunch time. The smaller ones would circle while the big ones crossed back and forth through the middle until the oval was cleared of children, whereupon they settled down to graze!

I find myself awed at the kangaroos' skill at clearing the oval so they could graze on it, and desperately sad that the drought has forced them to do such a thing.
No kangaroos or children were harmed at all thank goodness.

On a completely different note, I want to give a BIG HUG and thankyou to [livejournal.com profile] hill_ for her lovely virtual gift this morning!

And you have to go see [livejournal.com profile] mudblood428's beautiful new painting!

Oh! And listen to the latest podcast from http://www.spell-cast.com/! There's a fantastic chat between some of the most awesome artists in fandom!! And I am totally honoured and asqueee that they asked me on too!

Well you sound like you’re in a much better place then you were yesterday. Glad to hear that. You should always say what you feel when you can. LJ is certainly the place for that sort of thing.

We have sort of the same problem with White Tail Deer here. One made the news the other day when it jumped through a window of a tanning salon in the middle of the day. We have them in our front yard every now and again and they wreak havoc on the roads around here. Mason hit two of them in the same season a few years ago. Messed up the car but he was ok. Can’t say the same for the poor deer however. Loved the Spellcast chat you had. It must have been really fun.

I'm impressed that the kangaroos could herd children like that. Can I hire a few for my one child? Well, not really, but it feels that way sometimes.

I was thinking that it sounded a lot like the deer issue here, only here there is almost always someone hurt, the deer or a person.

Can I ask for a translation of "the oval" is that like the lawn or something?

It´s kind good to read things about where and how you leave!i live in a 9 million people city and sometimes, I have the impression there are people thinking I post from the middle of the jungle, with snakes and indians all around! :D :D

Commonly it's a football oval, but all sorts of games can be played on it. It's just a large, grassy oval shaped space. You'd probably call it a sports field? Most schools have one if they have the space.

A kangaroo will make a mess of your car if you hit one while driving. And, yes, I daresay it is similar to your deer issue. Kangaroos fill the same ecological niche as deer. :~)

OMG, that kangaroo story is amazing. IT is sad that you have such a drought, but amazing to see nifty critters up close.

I got to see three river otters the other day and was so thrilled by it.

Oh, well that makes sense. My school doesn't have an oval as were are an urban school.

*g* Wow. I don't think I've seen roos act like that before.
I've had one hold onto my arm so it could eat the food I had there. It was at a park, not in the wild but it was kind of scary. I wasn't going to say no, it couldn't have the food. It was almost as tall as I was.
