Well, he was 'redeemed' I guess, in that he died for the good guys. But, personally I thought it was a throwaway death. A real 'oh, crap! We better do something with him! Quick, kill him off!'
I have read that the script wasn't finished when they began filming That's interesting to hear. I've heard of that happening on other movies. I don't know, maybe it's common, but I can't believe it could be good for the story.
