(no subject)

This post is the result of an idea I got from glockgal a little while back. (*yoda voice* so blame her you must, yes, hmm)  But that ‘oh so anal’ part of me just had to have a go.

So here you’ll see a whole lot of my drawings from age 12 up.  I did try to find some earlier pics but, sadly, couldn’t find any.  My kids come across them from time to time in the backs of books and things like that, and have a go at me for drawing in a book – something they would be dragged across the coals for.  ;~P  But it seems I hadn’t put any away for ‘safekeeping’ as such. I was obsessed with horses as a child, so that’s pretty much all I drew.  Although I’m sure I did some of Kimba the White Lion and Prince Planet, which were my favourite cartoons.

#1 this was done from Life on my first school camp, 3 weeks into form1 (yr7) Feb 1975. As I said, I had a passion for horses at the time – it was all I would draw, and was greatly aggravated when my art teacher insisted I draw other things.

 

#2 this one, also from 1975, was rather aptly labelled “Imprisoned”.  I suspect we were doing something about colonial Australia and convicts at the time.  The drawings either side of this page were of Sovereign Hill, which is a very popular Gold Rush theme park (near Melbourne) for want of a better description.

 

#3 now we launch into My Comic.  This is the very first panel – drawn in 1975 with biro and coloured pencil in a scrap book no less.  Of course I drew on both sides of the paper and unfortunately, in a lot of the pages, the image from one side is coming though to the other.

 

#4 oh yeah *goofy grin* here we go… Yeah, that is Charlie’s Angels singing (an ABBA song of course!), with Starsky and Hutch monitoring.  And, yes, they are still on Moonbase Alpha.  I have to tell you, it was really hard to pick an illo from the early part of this Comic that wasn’t just too embarrassing. (and when you see what’s coming that concept will seriously boggle your mind)

 

#5 Ok.  Post Star Wars.  I had actually drawn this section in biro, like the earlier parts, but discovered inks, so went back and redid it. Thank goodness inks couldn’t be used on scrap book paper! This was done on sketchbook paper and is dated 1978.

 

#6 this one would have been late ‘79, early ’80.  Dr Who and Leela on board the Nostromo.   You thought I was joking when I said I put everything in my Comic, didn’t you?  Then BEHOLD –

#7 can your hearts fathom the audacity of such a crossover? Can your minds contain their disbelief?  No.  Neither can mine.  But then, 20yrs from now, I’ll probably feel that way about the fannish shite that is my current obsession. 

And, just in case you thought I’d left it out –

#8  of course Star Trek was in there too!  :~D  (Kirk and Spock were in the really old part.  This section of the Comic was post SW so was of course Next Gen.) This is a relatively recent addition – c1998. 

 

#9 an unfinished ink linedrawing – Flight to the Ford. 1981.  Horses again.  ;~P

 

#10 part of an attempt to teach myself airbrushing c1983.  Herne the Hunter from The Dark is Rising.

 

Dear ol’ Comic came to an abrupt halt when I got online and discovered the rest of fanficking fandom.  I know I go on about it, but I honestly could not get over the shock of discovering that I was not the only person on the planet who wrote fanfiction.  That there were literally thousands of people out there just as strange as me. Weirder in fact!  Which is why I feel brave enough to post the pics I have. Very heartening.

 

One more pic.  This is for those who have read my SW fics and might get a kick out of seeing Gizela, one of my Original Characters.

 

Hope you enjoyed that.  :~)  If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this overview of my art over the years, it’s that my drawings are MUCH better when I work from reference.  Much, much, much…

Guh. Wow.

So impressive! I can't even draw a stick figure, so your efforts aged 12-13 outdistance mine by a factor of, oh, about a gazillion.

Whoa...! Even your young stuff blows my brains out. I used to draw horsies, too. But mine look like I drew them with my mouth in comparison to yours. Leela, you kill me. Amazing. Totally amazing.

Wow, I know that this was such an early post in your journal, but I started at the beginning when a friend of mine popped me the url so I could keep up with your work. I'm glad I went back because I had a feeling that I'd find treasures like these--I'm not disappointed.

I wish I had even a fraction of your talent. I really do. I re-discovered SW fandom a little over a year ago and I've been hooked on your work ever since.
