Mood is complicated, lots of code. Background not so complicated, just use the FAQ browser in main LJ, Icons, just upload 15 of your faves and replace them occationally.
Personalizing the journal and making your own background isn't too hard - more time consuming than anything else. If you're anything like me, once you've decided on a journal style, then you'll piddle around with the colors, the wording, and the pictures you use. It took me a couple of days of fine-tuning before I settled on the look of my journal.
I only just updated to paid as well, so far all i've done are a few icons and my mood pictures! Still haven't figured out the whole customized part yet... Good luck with it though!
