birds!

This evening my daughter threw out the scrap/stale bread for the birds, which we do every day. We have a family of magpies who will take meat out of our hands, and for a while there we had 2 wild ducks visiting every evening. Tonight we had

First there were only a couple...


Then they called in their mates!



this one looks like a bad photoshop job!! Seriously looks like he was pasted on and the colours look totally fake! :~P But look at him looking right at the camera! :~D So gorgeous!


We were able to get amazingly close. Myself and my 2 youngest were right under them and they didn't seem worried about us at all. They talked to us - looked us in the eye and whistled back when we whistled at them.


I love where we live; the wildlife is brilliant. (and they love our yard because it isn't a landscaped perfection like our neighbours'! ;~P)

Living in the city, I feel blessed whenever I see anything other than seagulls, pigeons, cats, or dogs. But we never get anything as amazing as those birds. Beautiful!

They make the most adorable pets! We had one that used to visit us quite often. She was so cute - her name was Gertie. We get HEAPS here cause we have fruit trees. Figs (they love love LOVE the figs) and huge towering gums and lily-pilly plants. They're so funny. You walk outside and the lookout (they have a lookout) goes "EEEEEEEGH!! EEEEGH!" like, "DUDE! HUMAN! WATCH OUT!" So funny. If I walk really slowly and quietly they don't mind. I got some pretty sweet photos of them, actually. But anyway. Whee! Love these birds. :D

So cute! Live near Currumbin? Far North Coast of NSW is seriously teaming with lorikeets. My grandparents get 50 every evening in their backyard.Its crazy.

No, these are yellow tails. HUGE birds. Black with yellow cheeks and under their tails. They get in the pine trees and bite off the pinecones and woebetide anyone underneath! ;~P
I've seen flocks of Major Mitchell's fly past, but they've never stopped in our yard! ;~D

I used to work at Currumbin Sanctuary- how wierd is that? Anyway you might get more lorikeets and more frequently if they get a dish of that hunnymush stuff- I forget what it's called but you can buy it in packets ready to make up at the pet shop.

Oh, we have a family of magpies and there's a new 'baby' - he's only just got his feathers and is all grey and downy still (so cute!)- and he kept approaching the lorikeets on the ground, hoping to share the bread, and they kept ganging up on him! They'd give him the evil eye and sort of lunge at him (never leaving the bread of course) and he'd back off. ;~P

Yay for the non-perfectly-landscaped yard! What great birds... They're so pretty! All I have is a flock of Canadian geese that flies over the house from a field to a pond a couple of times a day. :)

They're so beautiful! The most exciting thing we get around here are cardinals. And I think it's very sweet that your daughter feeds the birds every day. What a great way to give her a connection with nature!

Wow they're gorgeous! I visited Oz once in 1991 and saw amazing birds like that, cockatoos, fruit bats, etc. So cool. All we have here is raccoons.

OMG!! I just cannot imagine looking out my window and seeing something THAT beautiful. I think in Michigan the most vibrant birds we get are cardinals, bluejays, and some kind of canaries. You're so lucky!

Wow, those are utterly fantastic!! I'm pretty sure I've seen those in pet stores around here, but I could be wrong. Do these learn to talk at all? I've played with the idea of getting some sort of tropical bird like that, but always think better of it since I have two cats. How cool that you get to enjoy them in your backyard1!

And aren't they beautiful? We haven't had any this year, probably because the old pear tree isn't bearing, but when it does there's flocks of them. Plus, after two days they get so used to us they spit pear on us whenever we go outside. :)
