This evening my daughter threw out the scrap/stale bread for the birds, which we do every day. We have a family of magpies who will take meat out of our hands, and for a while there we had 2 wild ducks visiting every evening. Tonight we had

First there were only a couple...

Then they called in their mates!

this one looks like a bad photoshop job!! Seriously looks like he was pasted on and the colours look totally fake! :~P But look at him looking right at the camera! :~D So gorgeous!

We were able to get amazingly close. Myself and my 2 youngest were right under them and they didn't seem worried about us at all. They talked to us - looked us in the eye and whistled back when we whistled at them.

I love where we live; the wildlife is brilliant. (and they love our yard because it isn't a landscaped perfection like our neighbours'! ;~P)

and here's some info if you're interested - Rainbow Lorikeet

I didn't even know birds *came* in these sort of colors. They look like they'd glow in the dark. :c) Gorgeous, gorgeous. And how cool is it that they're right there in your yard?

*is jealous*

Those are some amazing technicolor birds!

How come you Oz folk get all the best animals?

They're gorgeous, aren't they?! We're very lucky here. :~)

Aren't they gorgeous!

We have a tree they congregate in in our backyard.
They get drunk on the nectar and boy are they LOUD!!

But totally worth the noise to see these vivid creations

Wow! Awesome!

Living in the city, I feel blessed whenever I see anything other than seagulls, pigeons, cats, or dogs. But we never get anything as amazing as those birds. Beautiful!

They make the most adorable pets! We had one that used to visit us quite often. She was so cute - her name was Gertie. We get HEAPS here cause we have fruit trees. Figs (they love love LOVE the figs) and huge towering gums and lily-pilly plants. They're so funny. You walk outside and the lookout (they have a lookout) goes "EEEEEEEGH!! EEEEGH!" like, "DUDE! HUMAN! WATCH OUT!" So funny. If I walk really slowly and quietly they don't mind. I got some pretty sweet photos of them, actually. But anyway. Whee! Love these birds. :D

Ooo! We have a fig tree in the back yard with loads of fruit which we can't get to - I hope they find it!

From: [identity profile] logansrogue.livejournal.com

They were probably there when you started feeding them. :D

*cackles at the thought of staggering drunk birds* :~D

So cute! Live near Currumbin? Far North Coast of NSW is seriously teaming with lorikeets. My grandparents get 50 every evening in their backyard. Its crazy.
All we have in Sydney is city birds and Cockatoo's *mumble*

Nah, I'm in Melbourne. :~) We have lots of different cockies here too. I love the great big black ones!

From: [identity profile] leelastarsky.livejournal.com

No, I'd have noticed them if they were out the back. ;~)

From: [identity profile] rubyb.livejournal.com

Awww, they're absolutely gorgeous! We have a heap of 'em hanging around every couple days at my parents place, probably because they know that the magpies are getting fed! lol so cute

From: [identity profile] rubyb.livejournal.com

lol yes, but then we get the most horrible insects and reptiles! O_o

Oh, we have a family of magpies and there's a new 'baby' - he's only just got his feathers and is all grey and downy still (so cute!)- and he kept approaching the lorikeets on the ground, hoping to share the bread, and they kept ganging up on him! They'd give him the evil eye and sort of lunge at him (never leaving the bread of course) and he'd back off. ;~P

Wow, the colors are so vivid!

*curses area she lives in, which only seems to have boring brown birds*

No, these are yellow tails. HUGE birds. Black with yellow cheeks and under their tails. They get in the pine trees and bite off the pinecones and woebetide anyone underneath! ;~P
I've seen flocks of Major Mitchell's fly past, but they've never stopped in our yard! ;~D

watching them fly into the window again, again and again and never hurt thenselves never gets old to be honest!

From: [identity profile] purplethings.livejournal.com

Oh wow. I love bird-watching [although I don't know much about them, they are just nice to look at] and these are some amazing photos! *is jealous of your backyard*

From: [identity profile] luckycyberbunny.livejournal.com

that is so cool! where do u live! we don't even get cool colored birds here in South Florida!!!!

From: [identity profile] fernwithy.livejournal.com

Yay for the non-perfectly-landscaped yard! What great birds... They're so pretty! All I have is a flock of Canadian geese that flies over the house from a field to a pond a couple of times a day. :)

From: [identity profile] rondastarr.livejournal.com

I love your wildlife posts!
That is way cool, to come across such amazingly colored birds in our back yard.

From: [identity profile] stephieca.livejournal.com

They are so beautiful!
You are so lucky to be able to see such an amazing creature in the wild!

From: [identity profile] cariad2.livejournal.com

They're so beautiful! The most exciting thing we get around here are cardinals. And I think it's very sweet that your daughter feeds the birds every day. What a great way to give her a connection with nature!

From: [identity profile] orange-bastard.livejournal.com

Wow they're gorgeous! I visited Oz once in 1991 and saw amazing birds like that, cockatoos, fruit bats, etc. So cool. All we have here is raccoons.

From: [identity profile] aquarius-1977.livejournal.com

OMG!! I just cannot imagine looking out my window and seeing something THAT beautiful. I think in Michigan the most vibrant birds we get are cardinals, bluejays, and some kind of canaries. You're so lucky!

From: [identity profile] suehypno.livejournal.com

Wow, those are utterly fantastic!! I'm pretty sure I've seen those in pet stores around here, but I could be wrong. Do these learn to talk at all? I've played with the idea of getting some sort of tropical bird like that, but always think better of it since I have two cats. How cool that you get to enjoy them in your backyard1!

From: [identity profile] aquarius-1977.livejournal.com

Yeah, that! lol. I haven't seen them since I moved away from my home town almost 20 years ago; we don't get pretty things like that out here in the 'burbs.

Lots of seagulls in the K-Mart parking lot, though.

From: [identity profile] miss-kitty-b.livejournal.com

Wow. The most colorful birds in my part of the world are red cardinals. HOw cool that I would consider an "exotic bird" is just right there in your backyard!

From: [identity profile] simplydreamin.livejournal.com

Well, look at that! How spectacular! Thanks for sharing, I may never see anything like this in person. You're my window to the world today! :)

From: [identity profile] bibliophile20.livejournal.com

wow; those are beautiful. Have you ever considered setting up a feeder of some sort to attract them on a more regular basis?

And I don't know what to be more jealous of: the fact that you have these beautiful birds visiting you, or that it looks to be warm and temperate in your photos.

From: [identity profile] nixxymoon.livejournal.com

WOW absolutly beautiful .. and the fact that they let you get soooo close .. very cool!

From: [identity profile] hannio24.livejournal.com

Oh they are so pretty, I know what you mean you never expect to find birds with such vibrant colours. Nature, you got to love it!

From: [identity profile] mitigatedsplash.livejournal.com

ooo pretty! we don't get birds like that here. :-( Just those damn crows.

From: [identity profile] godrics-h.livejournal.com

I used to work at Currumbin Sanctuary- how wierd is that? Anyway you might get more lorikeets and more frequently if they get a dish of that hunnymush stuff- I forget what it's called but you can buy it in packets ready to make up at the pet shop.

From: [identity profile] magicalobizuth.livejournal.com

Those Swainson's are gorgeous! Just watch out for their projectile poop! How awesome to have them in your yard. Man!

From: [identity profile] rubyb.livejournal.com

Awww, poor little guy! Lorikeets really know how to stand up for themselves... then again, so do adult magpies o_O

You're in Melbourne? I thought you were in Adelaide for some reason.

And aren't they beautiful? We haven't had any this year, probably because the old pear tree isn't bearing, but when it does there's flocks of them. Plus, after two days they get so used to us they spit pear on us whenever we go outside. :)
