But it turned out that my problem was just that I didn't realize there was a whole complex process to get the door to open. That's not what "the door is open" means to me!

I don't think Harry will die, and I don't think Ron will die. There may be a moment where Ron seems to sacrifice himself so that Harry can finish the task, but I'm pretty sure the Trio will survive. ;~)

Agreed that the Trio won't die, but there are going to be other deaths, and I suspect that one among them will both occur at the climax and turn out to be far more important than most readers would ever imagine at this point.
