VA Legislator: Disabled Children Are God's Punishment for Women Who've Had Abortions
Last week we noted how Pat Robertson, Jonathan Falwell, and other right-wing activists in Virginia are targeting Gov. Bob McDonnell and other top elected officials to cut off any state funding for Planned Parenthood.
During a press conference unveiling the effort last week, a state legislator declared that God punishes women who have had abortions by giving them disabled children later:

He made that statement last Thursday at a press conference to oppose state funding for Planned Parenthood.
“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” said Marshall, a Republican.
“In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment Christians would suggest.”
Marshall was among more than 20 people, mostly Christian pastors and clergy, who gathered for the press conference in the General Assembly Building ...The press conference was held by a group called Virginia Christian Action. Its members presented a petition calling on Gov. Bob McDonnell, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to stop funding for Planned Parenthood. All three top officials are Republican.
The petition was signed by a number of prominent Christian leaders, including the Rev. Jonathan Falwell of Lynchburg and the Rev. Pat Robertson of Virginia Beach.

I live in VA - and these idiots do not represent what most of the folks in this state believe.
I don't know anyone with a special needs child who thinks they're a "punishment". I've got no words for those wastes of breath that call themselves Christian.

There's a special place in Hell for people who dare to say fuckwit things like that.
My grandmother had four children before my aunt who's disabled. Never had abortion, because of course back in those days abortion was the Sin of Sins. In those days there was also the horrifying story of the Duplessis Orphans, wrongfully pronounced mentally ill because the premier was a first-class asshole and couldn't deal with children born out of wedlock.
Seriously, Catholicism (meh, religion in general) and me are not fast friends at all.

Because... disabled children are a punishment to their mother? My son is a punishment? (Aside from the fac that I've never had an abortion. I must have done some other terrible thing.)
And because a Christian God would make a child disabled out of spite?

I do have words on one of my good friends.
Right after high school she got pregnant. And within a few weeks befor the first trimester was over, she aborted the baby. Skip along a few years and she has one out of wedlock.
He'll be 12 in May. A perfectly fine boy.
She found the love of her life and married him... and had another baby... which was born of down syndrom. Jonet is the most precious little girl on this earth. Within two years of Jonet's birth, she had another baby... a little boy who is just as beautiful and perfectly fine.
This woman knows who her God is and she has never questioned if God had punished her with Jonet because of the abortion she had when she was 18 and just graduated from high school and looking to build herself a life.
She has a loving husband and three beautiful children and raising her sister's 14 year old because she has been declaired an unfit mother.
Why would these idiots put a label on my friend for her mistake when she was 18?

Since the most vilified “right-winger” at this time has a disabled child I don’t see how you can use such a huge brush to paint all “right-wingers” as thinking the same way as these men. We can’t help the trash that comes out of their mouths any more than “left-wingers” can stop the trash out of some on that side of the aisle.
A lot of the comments to this post are as vile as what was said. What I really resent is the large tent used to vilify church, religion, and political belief on the words of a few.
