Lucas wants first 'Star Wars' sequel banned:
[Hollywood News]: Los Angeles, Nov 28 : Filmmaker George Lucas wants his "Star Wars Holiday Special", which was originally screened on the CBS network in 1978, banned because he is disappointed with its quality.
The first two-hour-long sequel to the popular film franchise told the story of Chewbacca's journey home with Hans Solo (Harrison Ford) to celebrate Life Day with his family, reported imdb.com.
During the course of the much-maligned movie, Princess Leia, played by Carrie Fisher, reduces Hans Solo and Luke Skywalker to tears with a song.
A contributor on the Star Wars website commented: "The Holiday Special has always been the red-headed step child of the 'Star Wars' family."
A source at Lucas Film added: "The Force was definitely not with Mr. Lucas the day that was born."

And I take great delight in knowing that NO amount of CGI fiddling after the fact could save it.
I also take great and wicked delight in the knowledge that this TRAVESTY is canon in the SW universe. More canon than the EU!

I'm finding that reaction to be a universal one. I did the exact same thing, and I'm a book-worshiper. The only other time I've defaced/purposefully damaged a book was after my finals in Chemistry 101.
And ditto on the singing wookiees. I personally like to think that whenEVER Chewie talks, he's singing--and that it drives Han nuts. Imagine a first mate that's always referencing showtunes. :^P

I have a slighter better version on tape, but it's PAL and the person I got the copy from had edited off the song at the end (cos it horrified him so much)! And you HAVE to have the song - it really is the ultimate capper to the worst show ever made.

I can remember seeing that special when it first aired--and I hadn't even seen the movies yet back then! I had no clue what was going on, other than that I'd also see commercials for the toys, etc. I vividly remember the wookiee porn--holy crap!
By the way, I ordered a VHS copy of it online about 8 years ago, so it's certainly out there.
I would say that the only good bit in the whole thing is seeing additional footage of Han--and dear me, he was hot! (That is when he wasn't looking like he wanted to shoot himself for being there!)
My favorite part, though, is watching Leia. Carrie is so stoned through that whole thing that she can't even stand up straight half the time. There's one scene where she literally manuevers around a desk, hand-over-hand, to keep from falling. I kid you not!
And what Star Wars special is complete without special appearances by Harvey Corman and Bea Arthur??
Finally, does this mean he's PROUD of the OTHER Star Wars specials? **hack**Ewok movies**hack**

That said? Don't ban it! Allow us our cheap pleasures in life. I mean, seeing Harrison Ford act in this is a mind-popping experience in itself. I mean wtf did they hold over this guy's head that he felt pushed into doing this? The speculation over this point alone is worth hours of fascinating conversation.
Then there's Carrie Fisher stoned, Mark Hamill with too much makeup, and Chewie's relatives engaging in over 20 minutes of unintelligable conversation (dude, maybe I'm wrong, but subtitles *were* invented before 1978, right?) Anyways, it's sooo bad that....well, I wanna say 'so bad it's good', but no....it's just BAAAAAD.
But still! I'm all for it anyways! I think every fandom needs to have it's own deep dark secret shame. It keeps you humble, and makes you appreciate when it's *good*. Days of Our Lives had the episode where Marlena Evans turned into a panther, the Beatles had "Revolution #9", Dave Matthews had that brainfart album where he temporarily went electric. See? So no one's immune. It's necessary to have these slip ups. It's unavoidable, even for you, George.

Oh, yes. Those are another set of issues in itself. But let's not pin the sins of Natalie Portman and co. on the poor, defenseless Original Trilogy. That's not their fault. They knew not what lay 20 years ahead of them.
But the Holiday Special? Oh, kids! Did they blow it there!
Anyways, I don't know what "banning" the Holiday Special would do anyways. A friend and I bought our copy off a bootlegger in NYC. I doubt very much an offical "ban" would have any effect on his sales.
So, yeah, better to just own up to your mistakes, George. And allow us all a giggle at your expense. Sorry, but you have your millions (most of it originating from our pockets), so let us have a few laughs. Thanks.

As for the trio's appearance in this travesty - they were on the wave of success and superstardom brought by SW at the time; I'm sure they agreed to do it out of loyalty. And I honestly believe they didn't know it would be so godawful. I mean, who would?

Seriously, I didn't even know about this until I saw your post, but immediately went on the hunt for it.
For anyone morbidly curious, find and install a bittorrent client, head over to SuprNova.org and look under TV Shows> Other. No idea how long it will be up for, but this one will be getting circulated around all my friends - everyone needs to see this at some point in their lives.
All I can think of right now is WTF were they thinking/drinking?
