Am I the only person in fandom (or on the internet for that matter) who doesn't have a sock? I feel sad and pathetic, but I barely have enough time to man this journal, let alone several others. :~\

I am here to play with people who share my love of the various fandoms, whether that be Harry Potter, Star Wars, Buffy, Lord of the Rings, whatever. I do not understand, nor do I think I will ever understand, the vitriol and animosity that goes on between the various factions in whatever fandom.

We're all here because we love the source material, yes? Surely the sandbox is big enough for everyone of every ship/sexual/canon or non-canon preference?

Forgive me if this doesnt make sense seeing as it is 3 am, but I have noticed some animosity between the factions as well. I'll go look through people's art and see comments like "not really my ship, but it's really nice" I mean, Art is Art.. why should a preference determine just how good it is? Maybe i'm misunderstanding you though.. It seems like that's the kind of thing you were talking about though.. What does having a sock mean? heh = (

A 'sock' is a second (or third or fourth etc) username/journal one person might have. They put on the 'sock' journal to hide or appear as someone different. It's pretty common for fans from one 'camp' to infiltrate the opposite 'camp' using a sock.

Yes, thankfully art (and artists) seems able to to avoid the factions from what I've seen. Sure I have OTP preferences, but that doesn't stop me enjoying others.

You're absolutely right, there's more than enough for everyone! Sounds like some people need to grow up.

Some people are just annoying. But then there are always those fun (yet squicky) ships like Snape/Squid to make us laugh hopefully :)

I used to have a sock for my role playing when I hung around at tf.n, but there was this dumb, immature and RIDICULOUS hatred between the Han/Leia fans and the Mara fans for some reason (it was mostly some silly EU fanatics stirring crap up) and a certain Mara fan trotted my sock out as absolute proof that the 'leader of the H/L campaign' (ha) was some dodgy backstabber out to ruin the lives of Mara fans everywhere.

This despite the fact that my signature proclaimed 'I am CMinor's sock!'

*sigh*

Oh yeah, I (almost fondly) remember some of the stuff at TFN. ;~) All that Bria Tharen shite... heh. Dear ol' glitter (or was it glitterbug?), where are you now? LOL. I didn't go near the Mara threads; there lay dragons! ;~D

STOP BEING NORMAL. You have no place in this fandom.

I agree with you. My little corner of the fandom can be found squirrelled away here, so I'm very far removed from the ridiculousness.

From: [identity profile] atlanta06.livejournal.com

I wonder if it takes a certain type to live in such a tumultuous area of fandom. I don't how poeple deal with all that drama 24/7. o_O

My corner's quiet and removed too. Maybe we should join forces. *huddles next to you*

sock?

wouldn't two be better - pne for each foot?

do a lot of fans complain about cold toes? mine are fine - perhaps its a circulation problem

From: [identity profile] mieronna.livejournal.com

I have one... but that's more like an uber-private journal with a extremely minimized friendslist that I created for the times when I deleted my regular journal... does that count as sock? And now I'm not going to use it ever again, because of the ugly ads that are popping up all over the place. Ugh.

I don't really get the animosity either... though I do admit that I read that "biography" out of interest. It shocked me more than anything.

I started reading the first part, then decided I didn't want to get involved. It was mostly before my time and about people I didn't know.

Then, because so many of my flist were talking about it, I decided to give it another go, and once I started reading it properly... yeah, like watching a train wreck - you can't look away. :~\ And I do remember the kerfuffle about the laptops etc.

I can totally understand people have a separate journal for family or private stuff, I just don't think I could manage a second journal myself. I wouldn't go into it often enough, and I'd forget the password or something! Hahahaha! ;~D

From: [identity profile] lizardspots.livejournal.com

It's ok, I don't have a sock either. :) I even failed at starting an art community, I don't have the organisation skills to run two journals. Let alone a hundred gajillion. LOL.

Surely the sandbox is big enough for everyone of every ship/sexual/canon or non-canon preference?

Yes it is!! Which is why I didn't even know who Ms Scribe was until reading that story. :D

I didn't know who she was either! But then I tend to bumble along in my own little corner of fandom, oblivious to the political machinations going on at the core. ;~P

You should have a sock! Socks are even endorssed by Dumbledore in HP! Socks are very HP.

A have many socks. Black, white, wellll acutally the white ones are kinda grey. The problem is something is stealing my socks so I never have them when I need them, which is only good for my flip flops because otherwise I'd enver use those.

This is why I invented house imps.
I think they take my underwear too, but underwear is much less relevant to HP than socks.

That is, of course, The Great Hope. ;)

I only had a vague idea of what a sock WAS before this whole Ms. Scribe saga. Now, I suppose I understand the "factions" and "shipper wars" in HP a bit better, but it still leaves me feeling headachy and with a rather desperate desire to sing "I'd like to give the world a Coke" and inspire harmony in the fandom that way.

But that might start the Great Coke Vs. Pepsi Vs. Other Beverage War.

I have no socks. I am here for the goods, hold the drama. ;) I certainly have my own OTPs but I'm not above liking things with other pairings. But I'm also not likely to play on message boards or f_w, either.

AMEN to that *a toast for you*

I wouldn't have been able to word it as simple yet as accurate as you just did *thumbs up*

From: [identity profile] gryffinclaw.livejournal.com

I do not have a sock for two reasons.

One like you I find it hard enough to maintain this journal and keep up with my flist.

Secondly sock journals are for cowards. If you have something you want to say then why not just say it. Do not hide behind another journal and pretend to be someone else. If you have the audacity to say it have the balls to stand by what you said. Otherwise I really do not want to hear from you.

From: [identity profile] maple-mahogany.livejournal.com

Yes. and yes.

Here, love, have a daisy, read some smut, and enjoy.

(won't make sense if you didn't read my lj) but yes, my sandbox is big enough. ;0

From: [identity profile] orange-bastard.livejournal.com

I have another journal, but it's not HP at all. Just RL all the way. The two worlds never meet XD

I JUST don't understand ship wars! I like 'em all pretty much, except some of the icky ones. But I wouldn't slam someone for it, esp publicly. I think it's just the nature of some people to create idiotic drama where ever they go; makes them feel important perhaps?

From: [identity profile] magic-helmet.livejournal.com

I've never had a sock, and never will have a sock. If things start getting too *hot* for me here, I'll bow our gracefully.

And ships, I'm more into slash, but I never say never. I've read some amazing Harry/Hermione and Harry/Ginny stories. My heart lies with Snarry, but there is talent in every corner of thick wicky wacky fandom.

So no, you aren't alone!

Socks and Shipper Wars

As someone relatively new to this fandom - I'll admit freely that it was all by extreme chance that I even found it at all - I have a limited understanding of ships, shipper-wars, socks and all the other related and seemingly bizarre language and acronyms associated with LJ and its communities.

I am here to play with people who share my love of the various fandoms

And I am here for a similar reason. I friend those whose work captures my imagination and attention. I have learned quickly that one shouldn't disregard one persons work over another based on pairing or squick - one never knows what one will like until _after_ you've seen it. And as for other fandoms and its fiction and art - why not look at it and appreciate the TALENT of the artist and not get so hung up in judging the CONTENT.

I hate seeing the things I love and communities I lurk in disintegrating into childish school yard wars over ridiculous things. We are all fans and that's all that should matter.

Sock? ::thinks of the theories about the Importance Of Socks in the HP Universe, then reads over your post a couple of times:: Oh, do you mean sock puppet, as in puppet journal? Do people do that? That's kinda stupid.

I can pretty easily ignore fandom drama since all I really do is read fanfic, RP, and comment on some meta, but yeah... I agree.

From: [identity profile] junesrose.livejournal.com

You know, my dog loves to eat socks, so I've got lots and lots of extra "ones" available if you want them. Just let me know. :)
/snark.

Yeah, what you said.

The sockpuppet thing makes me sad. Part of me worries that there are people out there being told they are socks when, if fact, they are real. How depressing would that be?

From: [identity profile] atlanta06.livejournal.com

Doesn't this just blow your mind?

I've been wandering around all day going "Jeus H. Christ on a Preztel Stick! We've all been had!". It stands to reason that during her Quest for BNF status and to rub elbows with established "Royalty of Fandom",she helped contribute directly to the bad blood between the factions,in order to further her own goals. That's why the shipwars turn so nasty! That's why certain ship names are reviled! That's why fans are tentative to join and eager to run! No one knew the root of it and thought it was just the way it was(despite evidence to the contrary that would be discounted purely on the success of her last smear campaign) and continued to be pawns in her game. That's why we all look nuts! It's like Voldemort himself walked into our world and we were too concerned about if our ship was canon to see what was going on! o_O *scares self*

My inner conspiracist's mind is blown. I'm going to go lay down now...

Oh wait...sock puppets...ah. :: winks ::

Meh, no. Who has the time for all that rubbish? I manage to briefly update my LJ account and only have a myspace so I can check up on my nieces. (The really have potty mouths...no idea where they get if from? ;P)

But you're totally right. All this drama (while completely fascinating to read) is just ridiculous.

Let's all play nice, children. No need to get ugly.

BTW: Tee's opinion? Yes, I think [livejournal.com profile] shocolate is adoreable as well.
